Vancouver is the birthplace of taiko in Canada. With a history going back to 1979, it is home to a large and growing community of taiko groups, each with its own unique identity.
Following the success of the 2002 Regional Taiko Gathering in Vancouver, local taiko groups looked for ways to assist and sustain our taiko community. The Vancouver Taiko Society (VTS) was formed in 2003 with the long-term goal of serving as an “umbrella” organization for taiko in British Columbia. It is a non-profit organization comprised of representatives from several of the city’s taiko groups.
The VTS has an interest in supporting other taiko-related initiatives, including performances and workshops. The society was behind the organization of the Regional Taiko Gathering in 2008, held in Vancouver.
The aim of this website is to serve as a central source of information about taiko in British Columbia.
