Chimugukuru ちむぐくる is an Okinawan expression that speaks heartfelt connection and the bond between souls. In this concert, explore the journey of traditional Japanese instruments and folklore that have traveled across the ocean and taken root on the shores of Canada.

The concert features Shuichiro & Yukiko Kuboki from Japan. These masters of the Tsugaru Shamisen will share the power, speed, percussive rhythms, and deep emotional resonance of this traditional three-stringed instrument.

Rounding out the show are three local artists:

  • Sansho Daiko presents a west coast adaptation of Japanese folklore featuring Susano-o, mischievous god of storms, accompanied by some feathered friends.
  • Noriko Kobayashi presents an excerpt from NoriNori Unravels, exploring the mysteries of Japanese songs, shigin, and family internment secrets, woven together with shamisen accompaniment in a blend of traditional and contemporary Japanese storytelling.
  • Marina & Miku share their deep longing and connection to their home island through its traditional folk songs.
