Canada Miyake Taiko Kai

Canada Miyake (Taiko) Kai is affiliated with Miyake Jima Geinou Doushi Kai from Japan and had its opening following the Tsumura workshops that were held in Vancouver in 2016, coordinated by Noriko Kobayashi, a former student of the founder, Akio Tsumura.

Miyake Jima Geino Doushi Kai is an organization based on promoting and preserving Miyake Taiko. The organization, founded by Akio Tsumura from Miyake Island,  taught the taiko group KODO the Miyake taiko style. His sons continue the tradition and the eldest, Kazuhiro Tsumura leads the organization. Miyake Island has a 200-year traditional taiko drumming, known as Miyake Taiko which supports the mikoshi festival celebrations of Kami Tsuki Jinja – a Shinto shrine.

Miyake Taiko is a low-stance form of drumming popularized worldwide, largely through KODO’s Miyake performance. Miyake taiko is a powerful and spiritual drumming that is a great workout for the body, mind, and soul. Canada Miyake Taiko Kai is a taiko club that trains, practices and performs the traditional drumming of the Tsumura lineage. We strive to invite our teachers regularly to teach and maintain the integrity of their taiko tradition here in Canada.

Canada Miyake Taiko Kai seeks to offer a platform for Canadians to access the Tsumura lineage of Miyake taiko, connect with Miyake members in Japan and around the world, and offer a pathway to professional taiko in Japan. Everyone of all ages is welcome including beginners.
